Popular Mexican fast-food chain Guzman y Gomez (GYG) is pushing forward with global expansion, even as its U.S. operations reported losses doubling to A$13.2 million.

The Australia-based chain, founded in 2006, has grown into one of the country’s most recognized fast-casual brands, offering burritos, tacos, nachos, and bowls inspired by authentic Mexican street food. Over the past year, GYG crossed US$1 billion in global sales, highlighting its robust performance outside of the U.S.

Despite the financial setback in America, the brand has announced plans to open at least 15 more U.S. locations, with a particular focus on Chicago, where it sees strong consumer demand for fresh, fast, and affordable dining options.

In Australia, GYG continues to thrive, with dozens of outlets now operating 24 hours a day, appealing to late-night diners and students. The brand has set a target of 1,000 restaurants across Australia, positioning itself as a competitor to giants like McDonald’s and Taco Bell.

“GYG’s strength lies in its brand loyalty, fresh food, and operational model that resonates with millennials and Gen Z,” said food industry analyst Rachel Evans. “The U.S. losses are a concern, but their growth strategy is long-term, and they are clearly aiming to be a global player.”

The chain’s expansion underscores a wider trend of Australian franchises going global, as they leverage strong domestic success to enter competitive overseas markets.
