Global pizza chain Papa John’s is making a high-stakes comeback in India with an ambitious plan to establish 650 outlets nationwide by 2035, marking one of the most aggressive expansion strategies in the company’s history.

Papa John’s had previously entered India in 2011 but exited the market in 2017 due to operational challenges and intense competition. This time, the company is banking on a stronger foundation, partnering with Pulsar Capital, a private equity firm, and the UAE-based PJP Investments Group, which already operates Papa John’s outlets in the Middle East.

The first store under this renewed strategy is set to open in Bengaluru by October 2025, serving as a flagship outlet for the Indian relaunch.

India’s pizza market is currently dominated by Domino’s, followed by Pizza Hut, but analysts believe there is room for another international player with a differentiated product. Papa John’s is betting on its focus on “Better Ingredients, Better Pizza”, premium toppings, and customer-centric dining experiences to carve out a market share.

“India represents a long-term growth market with a young and dynamic population that loves pizza,” the company said in a statement. “Our goal is to establish Papa John’s as a household name while adapting to local tastes and preferences.”

Industry experts note that India’s QSR (Quick Service Restaurant) sector is valued at over $8 billion and continues to expand, fueled by urbanization, higher disposable incomes, and a growing appetite for international cuisines.
